Montana Solar Shares Act

The Montana Solar Shares Act will empower communities to build shared solar projects, allowing subscribers to receive electricity credits and offset their energy use.

Key Highlights

- Enables local solar co-ops (2+ subscribers, 50kW-5MW, grid-connected).

- Open to retail electricity consumers in the same area (residential & small/medium commercial).

- PSC will set on-bill credit rate (distinct from net metering).

- Subscribers can donate their solar share to non-profits or low-income energy programs.

This bill was sponsored by Montana State Senator Christopher Pope.  It cleared the Legislature (House: 54-43, Senate: 46-4) and is awaiting Governor Gianforte's signature.
